The "Pole of cultural institutes of Naples" was born in July 2013, when the Italian Institute for Historical Studies, the Pio Monte della Misericordia, the Neapolitan Society of Homeland History and the Benedetto Croce Library Foundation decided to cooperate - in the context of the measures adopted by the Campania Region and intended for the digitization of archives and libraries - uniting the European funds destined to the purchase of the technological equipment foreseen by the tender “Digitization and networking of public and private archives and libraries”. In December of the same year, the Chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro joined the original nucleus.
