Garrettonline project

Garrettonline project seeks the critical and genetical digital edition of the 'Romanceiro' (a folk balladry collection) by the Portuguese writer Almeida Garrett (1799-1854). We refer to a very peculiar work he called "popular poetry", inspired by the nationalist Romantic paradigm. For the first time in the Iberian space, someone has launched a folk poetry collection. Therefore, we must stress its remarkable heritage value that demands nowadays a new editorial approach with a critical and genetic scope. The 99 poems and their paratexts that make up Almeida Garrett's corpus today will be represented in our digital edition, along with a deep reflection on the multiple possibilities and editorial tools that Digital Philology makes available to researchers.

This edition will provide a reading / browsing experience in which it is up to the reader to decide whether to activate (or not) the auxiliary reading devices, according to the instructions provided by the editors. Namely, it is possible to accompany the reading text by the visualization of Garrett’s autograph manuscripts and by the 19th century editions of the poem published under the poet's supervision.” About the expected impact of the edition, we intend to contribute to bring this Portuguese literary heritage together to a diversity of audiences not always attracted by “canonic” texts, whose reference universes have already been lost (for instance, a student audience) but without giving up of the philological rigor.
