HRIT (Humanities Research Infrastructure and Tools) is a project supported by a Digital Startup grant from the NEH, with a research team
led by Peter Shillingsburg. Its purpose is to build an open-source, collaborative, robust environment in which to aggregate, link or cross-reference, edit, and share vetted primary documentary texts--along with their scholarly enhancements, analyses, and commentaries, in the form of markup, annotation, keyword tagging, etc. It's based on a secure and integrated merged document, the CorText, which contains multiple variants of a given work and is amenable to standoff markup. The initial tools to be integrated into this environment include the standoff-markup Collaborative Tagging Tool (CaTT) that will enable humanist scholars to create sophisticated scholarly electronic editions and archives in a collaborative environment. The result will be an ecology consisting of the infrastructure, a group of initial on-line tools, and a model vetting system.
