Topic
The Digital Humanities have produced numerous methods of computer-based analysis of digital knowledge inventories. Since the turn of the millennium – initially originating with efforts related to the World Wide Web – the ideas, methods and technologies of Linked Open Data (LOD) and the Semantic Web have developed parallel to this. The fundamental principles of the Semantic Web are very close to the mindset of the humanities and cultural sciences: The structuring and formal representation of knowledge by means of specific vocabularies and ontologies is a practice of the humanities already in use for centuries. By using LOD, research data pools isolated thus far become decentralized, interwoven knowledge bases, which can be comprehensively developed and analyzed via the technologies and instruments of the Semantic Web. This results in new potential insights and methodological approaches.
The Indian Summer School 2017, taking place as part of Mainz’s master degree program “Digital Methods in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences”, is particularly dedicated to this development. The partner institutions of mainzed, the Mainz Centre for Digitality inthe Humanities and Cultural Studies, which shares responsibility for the inter-university degree program, are unified by their many years of interest in research in regard to the Semantic Web and the humanities and cultural studies. Web-based tools and methodological approaches to working with humanities-related LOD have developed in numerous projects at mainzed.
The Indian Summer School 2017 aims at examining the ‚traditional‘ fields of the Digital Humanities such as coding and annotion of text or image, working with space- and timebases data, involvement with graph technologies and historic network research in the context of Linked Open Data and the Semantic Web. The presentation of LOD tools und Semantic Web technologies and practical work with them will be one of the main focuses here.

Location
The Summer School will take place at the facilities of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature (www.adwmainz.de).
Participation
The course is credited according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and is adressed to interested graduate students from Germany or abroad, who hold at least a bachelor’s degree in the humanities and cultural studies or in information technology or computer science / information science. German and English are the working languages. The number of participants is limited to 40. 25 of these spots are reserved for first-semester students in Mainz’s master degree program. The 15 remaining spots will be awarded freely as part of the process. A waitlist ensures that all of the spots can be allocated. There is no fee for participation. Participants are expected to cover the costs for travel and accommodation themselves.
