Abstract deadline: April 15th
Paper submission deadline: May 26th
We are pleased to announce that The Digital Orientalist’s Virtual Conference 2023 will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023. This year marks a special date for us. The first post by the Digital Orientalist went online in October 2013, 10 years ago.
In 2020 we started holding yearly conferences dedicated to Digital Humanities in Asian Studies, and in 2021, we switched from a Twitter format to full-day Zoom events, dedicated to the discussion of digital research methods.
As we are getting closer to the 10 year mark of our project, this year the focus of the virtual conference will be “Sustainability.” We would like the conference to be an occasion to reflect on how DH projects can be sustained over the years. These are some of the questions that we would like to address:
What makes a DH project sustainable? How to ensure that a project has a long lifespan and can be used and incorporated in other projects?
What are some of the issues surrounding reproducibility of DH research results?
What are the constraints or the advantages when considering sustainability as a major feature for a DH project?
“Forgotten” DH projects and their return
The role of advertisement and funding in DH projects
In line with our mission, we will prioritize submissions from scholars in the following fields: Asian Studies, African Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, East Asian Studies, South Asian Studies, Oceanian Studies.
We welcome papers with multiple presenters. If your paper has more than one presenter, please fill in the relevant sections in the Google form.
Celebrate with us our 10th year of activities!
Submission
Please submit your 250-word abstract here by April 15th, 2023. If selected, presenters will submit a draft of their paper (no more than 5 double spaced pages, or in PowerPoint/Keynote format) by May 26th. These will be circulated only among presenters and registered attendees to facilitate discussion.
Format
The conference will be held in Zoom on June 3rd, 2023 (we will finalize the program in later stages, depending on the location of presenters).
Each presenter will be allocated a 20-minute time slot. After each session, there will be time for some Q&A and discussion. Please note that the event will be recorded. Recordings of individual presentations will be made available on our YouTube Channel pending presenters’ consent.
