The Department of Information Studies at University College London is looking to appoint two postdoctoral researchers (from immediate start until 30th September 2024 1.0FTE) on the AHRC funded project, “The Sloane Lab: Looking back to build future shared collections”, led by UCL in partnership with the British Museum and Natural History Museum.

The Sloane Lab project has been funded under the ‘Towards a National Collection’ call, which has seen the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) award £14.5m to 5 research projects to connect the UK’s cultural artefacts and historical archives in new and transformative ways. The aim of the programme is to use new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) to reveal the first insights into how thousands of disparate collections could be explored by public audiences and academic researchers in the future.

 

Position 1: Research Fellow in Advanced Data Architectures for Digital Humanities - Ref:1879975

UCL Department of Information Studies

Location of position: London

Hours: Full Time (1.0 FTE)

Grade7; Salary (inclusive of London allowance) £36,770 - £44,388 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

The main purpose of this post is to take the responsibility for the design and development of the Knowledge Graph of the Sloane Lab and to enable an integrated, homogenous data environment for the project. This will include the development of key technical solutions to ensure the successful aggregation of disparate datasets, integration, and interrogation under a unified data schema. The post holder will undertake research and development at the forefront of museum collections and digital humanities data science and is expected to have a background on Semantic Web Technologies and Linked Data.

The post is funded until 30th September 2024 in the first instance.

 

Key Requirements

Very good understanding of Semantic web technologies and formats. Experience with Triple Stores and/or Property Graphs. Experience with designing and implementing an appropriate data collection and storage infrastructure including metadata mapping and harvesting.

Position 2: Senior Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing -Ref:1879979

Location of position: London

Hours: Full Time (1.0 FTE)

Grade 8; Salary (inclusive of London allowance) £45,610 - £53,757 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

The role is responsible for undertaking research on Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence to implement solutions for information extraction, automatic handwritten text recognition and semantic enrichment of museum data and cultural heritage collections. The post holder will undertake key research on the contributions of AI to cultural heritage collections and is expected to be able to follow Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methodologies and to research ethical issues and algorithmic bias resulting from the use of AI models with rigor.

The post is funded until 30th September 2024 in the first instance.

 

Key Requirements

Demonstrable expertise in natural language processing and knowledge representation. Sufficient knowledge of computational linguistics to extract and classify text according to the types of meanings they express and evaluate the results. Experience implementing Handwritten Text Recognition models.
