JOB: Postdoc or Ph.D. position in Cologne (DE)
The Data Center for the Humanities (DCH) and the Institute of Linguistics (Department of General Linguistics) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Cologne is looking to fill a position as Postdoc or Ph.D. candidate in the Collaborative Research Centre: SFB 1252 "Prominence in Language".
Commencement of employment is scheduled for 1st of March 2017. The position offered is part time with a weekly working time of 19,92 hours (50%) and is a fixed-term work contract ending on 31st of December 2020. If pay scale requirements are met the position will be remunerated in accordance with pay grade 13 TV-L.
The central infrastructure project Data, design, and sustainability INF supports all projects of the Collaborative Research Centre with regard to the development of experimental design, sustainable data storage, data modeling, annotation and extraction of corpus data, as well as the improvement of statistical design. The focus of the position on offer is developing a standard for annotation, which delivers sustainable representations with expressive power of the various linguistic phenomena investigated in the various subprojects of the Collaborative Research Centre. They will benefit from this standard as it provides support for corpus-linguistic research and a sustainable way of archiving and representing research data.

Development of an XML-based data structure allowing for standardized data formats (e.g. according to the TEI-guidelines or official ISO-Standards)
Responsibilities
Defining transformation scenarios for the conversion of existing annotation schemas into the new data structure
Guaranteeing coherence and synergy between all projects of the Collaborative Research Centre
Guaranteeing availability of all primary data and annotations (in collaboration with the Data Center for Humanities) in a sustainable manner
- Advise and training in corpus annotation and specialized software
- Offering support for systematic data extraction from corpora, supervising student assistants
- Corpus-linguistic research
Job prerequisites
Degree in linguistics or computational linguistics (Ph.D. or Master) with a distinct focus on corpus linguistics. Experience with XML and TEI for developing representation schemas. Know-how in setting up and maintaining linguistic corpora. Ability to work productively in a team. Advanced knowledge of statistics as well as work experience with multilingual corpora and/or multimodal data are a plus.
