Ellen Charlesworth

Ellen Charlesworth is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg whose work investigates how digital technologies shape the way we perceive the past. Having completed her PhD at Durham in 2025, her most recent project explores how vision-language models change how the public engage with cultural collections. Before starting her current position, Ellen held fellowships at the UK’s national institute for AI and data science – the Alan Turing Institute – and the Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome. She continues to be an affiliate researcher in Rome, as well as with Cambridge Digital Humanities. With degrees in both Data Science and Art History, her past work on online image sharing received the Courtauld award for outstanding dissertation, while her work combining the two received the Inclusive Museum Network’s emerging scholar award. Ellen is an Associate Editor of DSH: Digital Scholarship in the Humanities.
